GMB Scotland proud to support ‘wear red’ anti-racism drive

Scottish football legends, politicians and trade union activists will join together in Glasgow tomorrow (Friday 26 May) to help promote Show Racism the Red Card’s (SRtRC) ‘wear red’ anti-racism initiative.

Every October, SRtRC undertakes a day of action to encourage schools, businesses & the public to wear red and donate £1 to help the delivery of anti-racism education for young people & adults throughout Scotland and the rest of the UK.

This year’s day of action is Friday 6 October but SRtRC’s education work is a year-round effort that’s needed now more than ever, with the campaign group recently revealing a 19 per cent rise in the number of young people subjected to racism since June 2016.

Supporters attending the event include former Scotland national team managers Alex McLeish and Craig Brown, along with Glasgow politicians Anas Sarwar MSP and Chris Stephens MP.

GMB Scotland Secretary Gary Smith said: “Now more than ever the work of SRtRC needs to be promoted and supported because ignorance, inequality and intolerance are increasingly prevalent.

We cannot be complacent about the challenges facing us as a society and that means vital education programmes are needed all year around – the real work that makes the difference behind the scenes.

The awareness and education that SRtRC delivers in our schools and communities is absolutely crucial in tackling discrimination at the grassroots level and let’s be clear that these challenges are the same in Scotland as they are anywhere else.

I am proud to have SRtRC with us here in GMB Scotland and our entire trade union is proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with them in the fight for equity and social justice.”
