GMB Invites Locals to ‘Help Find Council Cuts Leader’ at Balloch Easter Hunt

GMB will invite the public of West Dunbartonshire to join them and the Easter Bunny this weekend (Saturday 31 March) as they hunt for Council Leader Jonathan McColl, who has been posted missing since passing cuts of over £1 million to local services.

Following WDC’s budget earlier this month, vital services like mentoring, where twenty-three support posts helping kids with challenging and emotional behaviour issues will go, along with funding for local voluntary groups and a further thirty three posts in green space maintenance.

WDC have also moved to attack long-standing trade union facility agreements in a pre-emptive move ahead of further budget cuts in 2019 and 2020, reducing the number of full-time convenors to just two for the whole council.

Trade unions had planned to attend Councillor McColl’s surgeries this month but with the leader now cancelling his monthly surgery, GMB is now looking for the public to help them hunt for the missing politician this Easter.

GMB Scotland Organiser Hazel Nolan said: “The council administration imposed a budget that attacks jobs and services, affecting some of the most vulnerable people in West Dunbartonshire, and attacks the basic principles of workplace democracy.

But the efforts of the trade unions in securing discussions with the council leader have been stonewalled and the Councillor has cancelled his scheduled surgery once again - it’s like a big boy did it and ran away!

It would seem that Councillor McColl doesn’t want to speak to the council’s employees, their trade union representatives or indeed his own constituents and that is totally unacceptable with livelihoods on the line.

So the Easter hunt is on and that’s why GMB Scotland is calling on the good people of West Dunbartonshire to help us find their council cuts leader in his own ward this Saturday afternoon.”
