Dear GMB Member

GMB Scotland in Bakkavor – 2018 Pay Offer Consultative Ballot – Reject Poverty Pay!

The priority of GMB Scotland is the defence of your interests.

For months we have been attempting meaningful negotiations with Bakkavor to secure a pay offer that helps our members tackle the cost of the living. That’s why we submitted a £1 an hour increase for all hourly paid staff in our claim.
It is deeply regrettable that your employer is refusing to move beyond a derisory below inflation 2.25 per cent increase for hourly-paid staff. This is a below inflation offer for all hourly-paid staff, forcing everyone to work just as hard but for less money in real terms.

Let’s put this into context…

For staff on Grade SO3 it means an increase worth 64 pence an hour less the Scottish Living Wage rate of £8.75.

For staff on Grade SO4, it means an increase of just 2 pence an hour more than the UK National Minimum Wage for 25 year olds and over of £7.83.

This isn’t just pay that fails to meet the basic cost of living. This is poverty pay for many staff in Bakkavor.

That’s why GMB Scotland will launch of full consultative workplace ballot of our membership, which will run from 10AM Tuesday 3 July until 6PM Saturday 7 July.
You will be asked: Do you accept or reject Bakkavor’s 2.25 per cent increase for 2018?

GMB strongly urges you to reject poverty pay in the consultative ballot, by marking a cross (‘x’) in the box marked REJECT.

Only by being a member of GMB can you vote in this ballot, so if you want to join our campaign to reject poverty pay in Bakkavor then you can join today at www.gmb.org.uk/join

Please ensure all your contact details, particularly mobiles, are up to date to receive our campaign updates.

Dear GMB Member

GMB Scotland in Bakkavor - 2018/19 Pay Talks Update

The priority of GMB Scotland is the defence of your interests!

Over the last couple of months your GMB Reps have been negotiating with management on your behalf.

Sadly the company is still insisting that 2.25 percent is as high as they can go. They justify this by stating that sales are down by 7% over the last 3 years and that the loss of potatoes and parsnips will account for a reduction in turnover by about 15%.
This is troubling news but let’s be clear, it is not the responsibility of the hard pressed workers in Bakkavor Bo’ness to pay the price for this bad news.

When you look at the following increases in the cost of living:

  • 2% increase in pension contributions
  • 3% increase in council tax
  • 5.5% price increase to gas and electricity
  • petrol prices at their highest in 3 years
  • inflation running at close to 3%

Do the company seriously think that an offer of 2.25% is credible! GMB is campaigning for your employer to think again.

Dear GMB Member

GMB Scotland in Bakkavor: Important 2018/19 Pay Claim Update!

The priority of GMB Scotland is the defence of your interests.

Over the last few weeks we have conducted mass-meetings with members and workers following an initial meeting with Bakkavor management earlier this month concerning your 2018/19 pay deal.

We’d like to thank you for your participation and your feedback couldn’t be clearer: Pay is the priority - Bakkavor needs to make work pay for GMB members!

GMB takes a no-nonsense approach to our representations. That’s why we will now submit a claim for a straight-forward £1 an hour increase across all four grades within the hourly paid bargaining unit for 2018/19.

It is vital that we continue growing our trade union in Bakkavor to be bigger and better. More members means more strength and more money in your pocket. Be assured that we’re not interested bargaining away hard fought terms and conditions for extra pennies. Growth is key!

And with Bakkavor recently confirming eye-watering group revenues of £1.8 billion it’s clear that business is booming and your employer can more than meet our expectations.

Our next meeting with Bakkavor management is scheduled for Thursday 22 March.

Again, you need to be engaged in this process, so we would urge all members to ensure their contact details, particularly mobile phones, are up-to-date with your GMB workplace reps and organisers.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact your local reps via email at GMB.CP@hotmail.com or call 07920 388108. Alternatively, you can contact our Falkirk Office on 01324 670676 or email

Dear GMB Member

GMB Scotland in Bakkavor – Make Work Pay! 2018/19 Pay Survey & Negotiations

The priority of GMB Scotland is the defence of your interests.

For years now, GMB Scotland members have been the backbone of Bakkavor’s success – your work and skills have helped transform the business into the market leader in fresh prepared foods (FPF).

Last year, we campaigned together to deliver the highest pay award ever negotiated by a trade union within Bakkavor. We also defended your terms and conditions and brought forward the pay anniversary date to April.

By defending your interests and sticking together, we stood-up to management, grew pay and grew our trade union. A good start, but we still have more to do.

Ahead of the publication of its official figures on Wednesday 28 February, Bakkavor expects its group revenues to increase by 4.6 per cent to an eye-watering £1.84 billion. Your employer has acknowledged “continued progress” – business is booming.

But for workers, times are tough. Recently the cost of living in the UK reached a six year high and currently stands at 3 per cent CPI. So, anything less than the rate of inflation is a real-term pay cut for workers.

This sets the backdrop to our meeting with management on Monday 12 February and for our workplace visits thereafter (schedule to be confirmed shortly), where we will hold mass meetings and conduct our pay survey in support of our claim for 2018/19.

Our challenge to Bakkavor is clear: Make work pay for GMB members.

Over the coming days, weeks and months, we will be in regular contact with members via email, SMS and on-site too as our campaign to make work pay gets underway.

It is vital that you are fully engaged in this process, so we would urge all members to ensure their contact details, particularly mobile phones, are up-to-date with your GMB workplace reps and organisers.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact your local reps via email at GMB.CP@hotmail.com or call 07920 388108. Alternatively, you can contact our Falkirk Office on 01324 670676 or email gmbscotcampaigns@gmb.org.uk
