GMB Scotland Calls For Burton's Biscuits To "Act Now" And Protect Vulnerable Staff

GMB Scotland have raised concerns today (Friday 20 March) for the health and safety of its members and all vulnerable workers at Burton’s Biscuits in Sighthill, Edinburgh amid the coronavirus crisis.

While good employers up and down the country are taking a pragmatic approach to the UK Government guidelines for employees who have underlying health conditions, Burton's are refusing to apply sensible adjustments within these guidelines to protect their most vulnerable of staff.

Benny Rankin GMB Scotland Organiser said: “GMB have repeatedly requested that the Burton's management look at the most vulnerable at risk employees in line with the government guidelines.

“But their responses have been bewildering, stating that they are waiting on government guidance on at risk groups.  These groups were identified many days ago and when GMB sent the guidelines to the employer, their immediate response was, “We are fully aware of the list and waiting on further advice from the Government”.

“There is no need to wait, the guidelines are there and this is negligence. Burton's are playing fast and loose with their employees’ health and safety in the midst of the biggest public health crisis in modern times.

“Burton's must act now to protect and support their workers and help them get through the coronavirus crisis."
