Cordia U-Turn On Shameful ‘Pay Cut By Post’ Attempt

It will take a significant effort from Cordia to begin restoring its shattered credibility among the workforce and their trade unions says GMB

GMB Scotland has today (Friday 16 September) welcomed confirmation from Cordia that it has ended their shameful pursuit of alleged wage overpayments to staff.

The Glasgow City Council arm’s length organisation, which provides home care for thousands of service users across the local authority area, notified 58 members of staff without consultation by post last weekend that they would be reclaiming up to £1,400 from their earnings.

Cordia, who attempted to blame GMB Scotland for the alleged overpayments after the union’s  year-long grievance campaign for pay parity for all staff employed on ‘7 days off, 7 days on’ contracts, swiftly U-turned following challenges by GMB Scotland and local elected representatives.

GMB Scotland Organiser Louise Gilmour said: “Cordia used its own employees as a tool to hit-back at us for the collective grievance we launched to get parity for underpaid staff, causing anxiety and panic among our hard-working members.

Cordia has requested talks with us but we now fully expect them to re-visit the terms of our collective grievance and to work towards what we see as the only satisfactory resolution – the full upgrade of all staff on ‘seven on, seven off’ shift patterns from 19 to 21 points.

This U-turn is the only decent course of action Cordia could take after it’s shameful ‘pay cut by post’ attempt to bully hard-working home carers into a race to the bottom on their modest earnings.

However, it will take a significant effort from Cordia to begin restoring its shattered credibility among the workforce and their trade unions after this sorry and unnecessary saga.”
