Show us the plan: GMB on MPs' alarm over green energy jobs shortfall

Friday, October 24, 2025

GMB Scotland has urged ministers to deliver plans not promises as MPs warn too little is being done to create green jobs as oil and gas industries shed workers.

A report from Westminster's Scottish Affairs Committee today claims Scotland's energy sector is at a "critical juncture” with communities at risk because of huge job losses offshore and in supply chains.

GMB, one of the biggest unions across the energy sector, said the report is only the latest to expose the widening gulf between ministers’ rhetoric around promised jobs in renewable energy and the reality.

Louise Gilmour, GMB Scotland secretary, said: “The alarm bells around the so-called just transition have been ringing constantly for years but are now deafening.

“Ministers’ can no longer stick their fingers in their ears and shout more loudly about all the great things coming tomorrow while ignoring catastrophic job losses today.

“The MPs’ report is grim but completely unsurprising and comes days after the Scottish and UK governments were continuing to insist they have a plan. If they do, it is beyond time to share it.

“No matter how many times they are repeated, promises and platitudes will not feed families, heat homes or protect our communities.

“We must build supply chains in renewables but our offshore industries demand urgent protection because our country will need its oil and gas, energy security and jobs for years to come.”
