Football legends, campaigners and unions join the call to say, ‘We have more in common’

GMB Scotland and Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) will take part in ‘The Great Get Together’ as they team-up with Scottish football legends to play United Glasgow FC tomorrow (Friday 16 June 2017) in a friendly match.

Across the country there will be thousands of community events inspired by the life of the late Jo Cox MP and to mark Jo's belief that, "We are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us.”

The match will take place at Bellahouston Park’s Palace of Art Pavilion in Glasgow with a 1PM kick-off, where ex-Hibs great Mickey Weir and Scottish football cult hero Jose Quitongo will be among the famous names lining up.

GMB Scotland Secretary Gary Smith said, “There are few better ways of demonstrating that we have ‘more in common’ than a game of football and we are delighted that United Glasgow along with a host of football legends will join us to do just that.

Now more than ever, the Great Get Together sends out as an emotive, powerful and just message and our trade union is delighted to play our part in strengthening our community ties and campaigning to honour the life and legacy of Jo.”

Show Racism the Red Card Scotland Campaign Manager, Nicola Hay, added, “We have campaigned and promoted education for years to break down barriers between communities and encourage people to not judge others through stereotypes.

We firmly believe that football brings people together, people from all different back grounds play on the same team for the same goal. We are proud to support this event in memory of Jo Cox and to continue with her vision.”
